“I’m never going to lie to my child” Ok, that sentiment lasted the length of time it took for my daughter’s personality to develop, and I realized just how strong-willed she was. I had to come up with ways to get her to do things that needed to be done and try to circumvent the hours of argument that inevitably followed.

“Here when you’re ready” I press send on the message just as I pull into your street because I’ve learned that the mobile signal near your apartments is hopeless, so I need to send the message before I have zero bars. Besides, that usually gives me enough time to turn around before you're outside and ready to get into my car.

The nightshift housekeeper
Ellie took one last look around the hotel corridor, then knocked on the door to the Presidential Suite. She waited a few seconds, hearing no answer she used her housekeeping key to open the door. As she pushed her housekeeping cart inside, she inhaled the smell of sheer opulence. There was no way that she would ever be able to afford to stay in this suite overnight but was going to take the opportunity to spend some time in there now.

My biggest leap of faith
If you asked me to pick some words to describe myself, I don’t think the phrase “risk averse” would ever come into play. I’ve worked in risky occupations, taken calculated risks on jobs, and engaged in thrill-seeking activities.

A shower play
Sonya put her hand in the shower to feel how hot the water was. She thought it would be ok but knew that Adam would be asking her to make it cooler. For Sonya, when it came to showers, the hotter the better, but Adam’s limit was when it had his skin peeling off. Sonya didn’t mind, because she knew that it was going to get hot enough very soon.

I want to get comfortable. Pull the sheets over my side of the bed. Roll once, then back again, maybe this is the spot. What if I flip over the pillow to the cool side?

The almost perfect wingman
When my girlfriend walked out on me, I was shattered. I didn’t see it coming, although all my friends apparently questioned why we were together and how I managed to stay with her for so long. I wallowed in the self-pity of “Nobody will ever love me again”. Then I bought Ronin, a German Shepherd puppy. He was cute, with pointy ears and a pudgy face, and he had personality. We hit it off immediately and became the best of buds.

Can you retire from a life of crime?
At what age can you afford to retire from a life of crime? Often a lot of cops would talk about how they would commit a crime (sadly some go ahead and commit crimes, but let’s just focus on the ones that remain in the realm of theory). We would talk about how you’d do something, and inevitably you would realize that you had to be professional, one big score, and walk away. You could invest and live off the money, plus we would invariably settle upon a figure that would be necessary to live in a non-extradition country, and a couple of thousand dollars would not cut it.

My daughter's psychic powers
There have been plenty of times that I thought that my daughter had magical powers or could read minds. She would come out with a statement that was the exact same thing that I was thinking, and I would ask, “Can you read my mind?” She would just giggle and not answer which added to the mystery of it all. But this one incident left me thinking that there was something more to her powers.

Park and ride
As Tanya put the transmission into park, she could feel her heart pounding. It was that nervous anticipation that she always got just before seeing him. She had parked next to the car he had said he was driving, and she was grateful that at this time of day there didn’t seem to be many other people around, in fact, the car park was near on deserted.

Tanya stood in the kitchen of her house staring at her phone for a few seconds. She could feel her heart pounding at a million miles per hour. It was that same combined nervousness and excitement that she felt whenever she was going to see him.
