The Art of Slowing Down
This lesson from the mat was brought to you by a combination of Egyptian Yoga and Yin Yoga, which is slow, spending time in each posture, just listening. If you already do yoga then you most likely understand what this can be like, but if you are not a yoga practitioner there are different reasons to do yoga. I’m doing yoga to build strength, some do yoga for the inner work, some do yoga for flexibility some of them do it just to free up some space inside of them.

Moving My Big Body and How You Can Move Joyfully
Looking at yoga and movement hashtags on social media, you’re sure to find lots of different body types, but you’ll see the most representation for thin and petit bodies. My body has changed a lot through the last 12 years of my yoga practice, but my body has never fit into the classic Lululemon aesthetic that fills the pages of Instagram. Even when I was strictly dieting and working out vigorously for hours a day, my body was curvaceous and supple. Through injury and mental illness, my body has grown larger to protect me, and for that, I am so thankful.

Honouring Blackness in Yoga Spaces - 4 Essential Black Yogis. Top Story - February 2021.
Yoga has been an important part of my lived experience for the past three years. Through my practice, I have been able to confront issues relating to my anxiety, self-esteem, body confidence and self-compassion. Rolling out my battered and sweat-stained mat is the first thing I do every morning and the last thing I do every night. Recently, as with every other avenue of my life, I have made the conscious decision to expand and diversify. Diversify my hobbies. Diversify the content that I consume. Diversify the books that I read and the music that I listen to. For the most part, this has been immensely beneficial to my mental health and has further enriched my experience as a black twenty-something.

Breaking Up with Yoga (Sort of)
I’m just 1 person learning what sort of workouts my body is meant for… and what sort it isn’t. I have people in my life who swear by yoga and practice it daily. I’ve done enough of it to understand the benefits of a good flow. It’s like meditating with your body and stretching it so it’s able to do more fore you at the same time.

Yoga with Two-face the cat.
Yoga, whenever I do it, I feel like some of the weight that is on my shoulders has lifted. It not only helps me fight my mental health but also helps my flexibility and strength. (Let me tell you I am weak ha-ha). Now doing it with Two-face makes it even more interesting and fun. Two-face is not a boy she’s a girl. It was the only name I could like of when she was born. Really should be Three-Quarter face truly. (And yes Two-face as in Harvey Two-face from Batman.)
