Yarn is so pretty! How do I choose?
The first time I went to a store to pick out yarn for a project, I didn’t know how difficult it would be because of all of the options! I went by myself and I didn’t have friends that I knew of who were knitters and crocheters (I was also too shy to ask around), so I was mostly on my own for choosing the color, the weight, softness, and the type of yarn I was going to use. But, as a beginner crafter, those weren’t the terms I was using in my head. My criteria was Does it look pretty? Does it fit my budget (which, being a college student at the time, was as inexpensive as possible.)? My choice for my first project was a variegated light purple/white/dark purple. I brought it home, made a scarf for myself and, besides the lop-sidedness of it, I didn’t like it. Why? It was too rough and scratchy.* Since I had chosen my yarn based solely on color and price, the overall quality and fit for the project suffered. I didn’t know better and I’m here to provide some tips so that others aren’t as disappointed in their final products as I was.

Vocal Submission: A Little Black Book Slowly opening her eyes; like a new-born’s first time, Emma woke up from her delta brain-wave sleep, and felt the sky staring at her through her new windows. Waking up to the present-day she was given, Emma first said out loud, “Thank you God, I am grateful for this day, I am grateful to be here.” The sound of her gratitude echoed throughout her newly purchased house, stretching from the main bedroom on the top floor, to the crevices of her ‘larger than life’ kitchen. Ebbing and flowing out to the skirts of London and making it back the large green land that sat all around Emma’s Surrey house. Stereotypically, Emma Tatenen wasn’t the kind of person who would be able to buy the things she wanted to experience; she was used to living pay-check to pay-check, living a life without enjoyment. There was a constant worry and angst that Emma felt each day; before she experienced her wheel of fortune, she would affirm to herself daily, “I will be happy next month, I will be happy when I get more money, I will be happy when my stress goes away.” There was sadness to Emma’s old ways of life, her dreams seemed impenetrable, her daily thoughts consisted of questioning how she would put away money for savings and her sleeping patterns were just as bad as a new-born’s parents!

Covid Collage
Meet Covid Cuthbert, his unborn name was Covid Colin and he wasn’t a he until he was born, it all depended on the final parts coming together. He was conceived in lockdown one and born in lockdown two. On morning walks with my wife during that time I had the crazy idea of making something from all the detritus I would see lying around. Of course, I didn’t pick up every bit of crud I saw, but pretty much every bit of small plastic and metal I could find within a 15-minute walk of the house that was just lying about. My wife did draw the line at the bigger stuff like a shoe, a hub cap or two and the biggest of all, a tailgate from a trailer! At some point the finds dried up in the locality and so we went a bit further out just to find extra picks and got the extra exercise to boot. And so, my idea of a Covid collage was born. Initially it was going to be a flat piece of art but as time went on finds were coming together such that creating a Robot came to mind. This was additionally inspired during lockdown after watching Perry Grayson on Grayson's Art Club and his invention – Alan Measles.
