The Traveler
I spin around, desperately searching the packed sea of faces for any sympathetic expressions. “That’s what she said.” I insist, disliking how my voice rose higher and higher in pitch, as if whining at a room of figurehead royals and politicians was going to win me any favors.

A Dance with Shadows
It was the hottest day of the year. Actually it was the hottest day on record. Alayia twisted her long hair up on top of her head, seeking some sort of respite from the scorching sun above her. “Curse you, mom.” she muttered, but she was looking down at the dirt path beneath her feet. As the sun god’s daughter, she knew the heat wave was mostly her fault. She had just disappeared one day while her mom was working. And she had a charm to ensure none of the other gods could see her.

Rituals and Rites
I turn, watching the sleek skirts swish smoothly about my legs. “It’s beautiful.” I whisper. “It suits you.” My soon-to-be mother-in-law says, coming up behind me with a flower wreath in her hands. She settles it into my hair, smoothing the streamers along my back. I fidget with my sleeves.

Missed Message
Krisiera ran hard, feet kicking up clods of dirt as she sped across the hillside, breath coming in ragged gasps. She clutched the wooden tube containing the message tightly in her right hand as though it were a baton she would pass off on the track. Her pulse raced within her no matter how much she tried to even out her breathing. This wasn’t a leisurely jog, this wasn’t training. This was real.

Time
5:55am I toss my head back, savoring the cool air against my sweaty skin. The sky blossoms into a beautiful array of hues over my head. Birds sing as they stir in their nests, getting ready to take to the air. My legs tremble beneath me. I tap the screen on my watch to stop the timer. Seven minutes, ten seconds. So close. I wanted to break seven minutes so badly–I had since high school. I stumble forward, reaching for my bike and unhooking my water bottle from the metal bar. I take several deep gulps of cold water as I watch the surface of the river rush by, the falls thundering over the dam a few hundred yards away. The flowing water catches the earliest morning light, erupting in a treasure trove of glitter and sparkles.

Restart
My heart clenches, then drops to my knees as the view before me confirms the source of the noises I could hear from the time I entered the house. My husband, in our bed, with not one, but two other women. Never mind everything I’d sacrificed, all my dreams, my career, my family…to stay here with him because his family was here, though, and he couldn’t bear to be anywhere else without them.

Soul Split
I look down at his head in my lap, tears running down my face. I never thought he could be hurt. I never imagined my life without him, not since the day we met. I run my fingers through his curly hair the way he always liked. My arm shakes as I feel how cold he is.
