Lisa sat down at her desk and opened her laptop. She’d been awaiting word on the job she’d applied for and didn’t want to hassle the contact officer anymore. Her enjoyment of her current role had vanished a while ago. She found it easier to count the moments she didn’t feel like crying at work instead of the times that she did.

Like many people my age, movies like The Breakfast Club and St. Elmo’s Fire were critical to growing up. I can recite lines from both movies verbatim, even though I haven’t watched either for a couple of years. Like many guys, I had a crush on Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy, and let’s be honest Rob Lowe and Judd Nelson were the epitome of cool.

I’m a smart ass, I accept it. There have been times when my tendency to make a sarcastic comment or crack an inappropriate joke has got me in trouble. But a lot more times, it’s made work a bit more fun, and even lifted the mood in some pretty dark times.

I have a nasty habit when I am watching any movie or TV show when an actor comes on that looks familiar or piques my interest, I jump on the IMDb app on my phone and look them up. Sometimes I will say “Oh, that’s where I know them from” and other times I go “Oh, Wow!”

Why I've decided to stop towing the company line
I’ve been working in my field for nearly 30 years. Before you say it, yes I agree, I don’t look that old either. I consider myself a professional, I like to think of myself as a good leader, although I think every leader thinks of themselves that way. I have had aspirations to go higher, or at least I did until recently. I started writing today as part of my self-care, and an exercise in mindfulness, this article is where I landed.

Nobody paid much attention to him, the young man wheeling a suitcase into the airport. After all, there were a few thousand others there that day, all doing the same thing. Taking their suitcases, checking them in, then boarding a plane to some destination.

Am I a dinosaur for thinking not every job can be done remotely?
The other day I saw a post on a social media site that proudly proclaimed, “If your boss doesn’t believe in remote working, they are dinosaur”. I thought this seemed like a pretty bold statement, so I read on. They proceeded to say that “any job can be done remotely because the internet is everywhere”.
