The Number Stays
When the Voice You Seek Is Gonehe Number Stays

Today is the day Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone call. The phone has become more than a communication tool; it is the holder of essence.
And we are only too aware when that is lost.
Some conversations continue, even after the line has gone silent.

The phone sits
On the side-table
My fingers wait to grasp
And dial
That number.

But they walk
From the heart
Into the alleys
Of the mind.

Advice asked for.
Solace sought.
Assurance amplified -
Silent.

Unsaid.

In memory

My friend and I were just talking about all the times we reach for the phone to call his mom or my dad to share something then remember they aren't there anymore. Then starts the guilt of all the times we could have called but didn't because we were too busy. This poem wrapped all those emotions up tight in a bow. Beautifully done. It also reminded me today is my Momma's birthday and I can still call her.
