Poem for Annie

I have been embarrassed with flattery, so I shall return the favour:

She reviewed my work and paid me a great compliment:

Are you a poet?

It was a surprise to see:

A book review?

It had to be seen...

It was all too new

for someone like me.

*

You knew my tone and temper.

As I see it

(from where I've been),

we make every word fit.

Ideas move; we become the sender.

*

From your heavy praise,

I have more work to do

(and I feel rather keen).

Every word, old or new

Is a measure of my hours, days...

*

And this is my weak thank you,

and a welcome

to these lines; in-between

a friendship to some,

for me, a partner and a muse.

*
