Curtains of Fog

Candle flames flicker, and lamps strain to shine their light from windows

Indoor lamps strain to shine their light from windows

Fog is heavy, and streetlights are like onions in sack cloths overhead

We can touch the wispy gray strands of fog, strangling the light and our mood

The train whistle echoes through the valley as it sidles past the sea inlet on its way south, its window lights passing behind trees and buildings, going down and up the hilly track, illuminating its path like a card-shuffle animation

And in the morning, the sun cannot slice through the fog, its opaque curtain a ponderous being, creeping around corners and slithering up poles, saturating everything in its path

The birds are hunkered down; no birdsong can be heard today

Then, before night dropped us into blackness, the fog was sucked into the starry sky

~~

The fog has been heavy and eerie for days, and New Year's Eve brought such a foggy night, the top of Seattle Space Needle couldn't be seen. The fireworks happened but were inside a curtain of fog so not spectacular like most years. This poem was inspired by the heavy fog.

Andi - The fog, there is something eerie and scary both about the fog. Perhaps it is the fact that you can't see very well or very far. Beautiful imagery Andrea. Nicely done - Congratulations on Top Story!!1

Beautiful. We don’t get those thick, lingering banks of fog that distort the world, just morning river fog: https://promotion-survey.life/poets/sunrise-and-fog%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">

I too, love the last line. It has been a bit more dismal this year, and the political chatter is not helping. We must find our cheer in spite of it all. New horizons beckon. Lift the fog.

I agree with Silver the last line was cool. Before the night was dropped into blackness, the stars were sucked up into the starry sky. I don't remember reading a poem about fog before. Nicely Done Andrea.

Such a great poem but that last line was so cool! I loved how vivid the image it created was! There're never enough poems about fog.

  • Fog can be very eerie and give you some great photographs too, and there is the John Carpenter film

Wow, that’s both beautiful and eerie, Andi! Sorry the fireworks were fogged this year for you.

  • Oh wow, that gives ominous vibes. Sure seems scary. Loved your poem!
