A Proper Size

a poem

I went pants shopping today,

I went to a new store, one with a flashy SALE sign on its windows

I went straight to the wall,

where stacks of denim, cotton, and polyester waited

I dug through the different sizes available, trying to be positive.

-

The first pair felt like a cheap swimsuit, its tag was bare, a red flag,

the next said it was pure cotton, but they were starchy and wrinkled,

finally I found a pair made of actual denim,

it was not on SALE, but I was still trying to be positive.

-

I grabbed two sizes, both labeled MEDIUM, and hurried to the fitting room

the first pair of jeans failed to impress,

They had to be tugged roughly by the belt hoops to fit over my hips,

as the in seams pressed into my skin, I became wary,

I tore them off and picked up the next pair,

they slid on well, suspiciously well, up my legs and over my hips,

but, when I zipped them, a large gap of fabric appeared above my buttocks.

Maybe a good belt would fix the lumpiness?

Or maybe my body just isn't shaped right?

I took off the jeans, looked at myself in the mirror, and tried to be positive.
