How I Interpret Dreams

A Blended Approach to Understanding the Language of the Unconscious

Dreams are one of the most fascinating ways the mind communicates with us.

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have believed that dreams contain insight, warnings, emotional processing, and even guidance. Modern psychology agrees that dreams are deeply connected to the unconscious mind — the part of us that holds memories, emotions, instincts, and symbolic thinking.

The way I interpret dreams blends three powerful approaches: traditional dream symbolism, ideas from Carl Jung’s dream research, and personal word association. Together, these methods help uncover what your dream is actually trying to tell you.

Dreams Speak in Symbols

The first thing to understand about dreams is that they rarely communicate in a literal way. They come at you with symbolism that may not make sense in the beginning, but will once you start diving deeper into what is going on in your waking life.

Instead, dreams use symbols.

For example:

  • Water often represents emotions
  • Houses can represent the self or your inner life
  • Animals may represent instincts or personality traits
  • Being chased might represent avoidance or pressure in waking life

These types of symbolic meanings appear across cultures and are part of what many people think of as the “classic” dream interpretations.

But symbols alone don’t tell the whole story.

The Influence of Carl Jung

Psychologist Carl Jung believed dreams were messages from the unconscious mind that help guide personal growth and self-understanding.

In Jung’s view, dreams often show us:

  • Hidden emotions we haven’t acknowledged
  • Parts of our personality we have ignored
  • Inner conflicts we’re trying to resolve
  • Archetypes — universal characters like the Mother, Shadow, Child, Trickster, or Wise Elder

Dreams, according to Jung, aren’t random. They are attempts by the psyche to restore balance and communicate important information.

In other words, your mind is trying to help you.

Why Personal Meaning Matters

Even though many dream symbols have general meanings, dreams are still extremely personal.

A snake in a dream might represent fear for one person, transformation for another, or even something completely different, depending on their experiences.

This is where word association becomes incredibly important.

When interpreting dreams, I look at the personal relationship you have with the symbols that appear in them. I might ask questions like:

  • What does this object or person mean to you personally?
  • What was happening emotionally in the dream?
  • What events are happening in your life right now?
  • What was the feeling of the dream?

Sometimes the emotional tone of a dream is just as important as the symbols themselves.

Putting the Pieces Together

Dream interpretation isn’t about forcing a meaning onto a dream.

It’s about assembling clues.

I look at:

  • The symbols in the dream
  • The emotional tone
  • Your personal associations
  • Patterns or archetypes that may appear
  • What is happening in your waking life

When these elements are combined, the deeper message of the dream often begins to emerge.

Many people are surprised by how clearly their unconscious mind is speaking once the symbols are understood.

Why Dream Interpretation Can Be Powerful

Understanding dreams can help you:

  • Process emotions you may not have consciously recognized
  • Gain clarity about life situations or decisions
  • Discover hidden fears or desires
  • Connect with deeper parts of your psyche
  • Recognize patterns in your thoughts and behaviors

Dreams are often the mind’s way of working through things that logic alone cannot reach.

Information That Helps Me Interpret Dreams

Dreams are full of symbolic details. The more context I have, the more accurately I can understand what your unconscious mind may be communicating.

When you send a dream for interpretation, try to include as many details as you can remember. Even small elements can carry meaning.

Here are some of the things that are especially helpful to know.

1. The Setting of the Dream

Location often reflects the psychological “stage” where the dream is taking place.

Tell me:

  • Where did the dream happen?
  • Was it somewhere familiar, like your home, workplace, or childhood house?
  • Was it somewhere unfamiliar or strange?
  • Was the environment indoors, outdoors, crowded, empty, bright, dark?

Places in dreams can represent different parts of your life, memories, or emotional states.

2. The People Who Appeared

The people in a dream are rarely random.

Include:

  • Anyone you recognized
  • Strangers or unknown figures
  • Authority figures (teachers, police, bosses, etc.)
  • Children, elderly people, or groups of people

Even when someone appears as a specific person, they may symbolically represent a personality trait, relationship dynamic, or archetype within the psyche.

3. Colors That Stood Out

Color in dreams often carries emotional or psychological symbolism.

Let me know if certain colors were especially vivid or memorable.

For example:

  • Red might reflect intensity, passion, anger, or urgency
  • Blue may relate to calm, truth, or emotional depth
  • Black can represent the unknown, mystery, or the unconscious
  • White can symbolize clarity, transition, or transformation

Even small flashes of color can be significant.

4. Objects, Animals, or Symbols

Dreams often communicate through symbolic imagery.

Include anything that seemed important, unusual, or memorable, such as:

  • Animals
  • Objects
  • Vehicles
  • Doors, keys, mirrors, water, fire, etc.

These symbols often act like the vocabulary of the unconscious mind.

5. The Emotions You Felt in the Dream

The emotional tone of the dream is one of the most important clues.

Tell me:

  • How did you feel during the dream?
  • Did those emotions change as the dream progressed?
  • How did you feel when you woke up?

Dreams frequently highlight emotions we may not be fully processing during waking life.

6. What Is Happening in Your Life Right Now

Dreams often reflect things that are unfolding in your waking world.

You don’t need to share anything deeply personal if you’re not comfortable, but it can help to mention things like:

  • Major life changes
  • Stressful situations
  • Relationship shifts
  • Important decisions you’re facing

This context can help connect the dream’s symbolism to your current life experience.

7. Recurring Dreams or Symbols

If you’ve had this dream before, or if certain symbols appear in your dreams repeatedly, that is important to know.

Recurring dreams often mean the unconscious mind is trying to get your attention about something that hasn’t yet been resolved or understood.

The More You Remember, the Better

Dream interpretation works a bit like assembling pieces of a puzzle. Sometimes even the smallest detail — a color, an object, a location — can change the meaning of the entire dream.

If you’re submitting a dream for interpretation, include as many details as you can remember, even if they seem strange or unimportant. Often, those are the details that reveal the most.
