Why NASA Cancelled The Artemis III Lunar Landing

The mysteries of the universe continue to thrill and scare NASA and the world.

At 23:30 GMT on February 27th, 2026, a small compliment of analysts, technicians, and operators were in the operations center when the Advanced Scout Satelite alerted them to something unusual. Just mere months away from the long awaited return to the moon by humans, NASA and SpaceX had everybody paying close attention to the moon. A couple of generations ago, NASA and the United States celebrated their final trip to the moon, and hadn't returned since. And while the reasoning behind cessations of lunar exploration remained a mystery in many minds, America and the human race were finally about to return to the first step away from Earth and into the galaxy.

"Buzz, Buzz, Buzz," a loud alarm sounded.

Roger opened his eyes, half asleep at his station, and saw the red flashing icon on his monitor. He rubbed his face, desperately trying to wake up, and began typing. His neighbor in the operations center looked to him, and asked if he was seeing the same thing.

Roger shook his head, confused. His screen rapidly changed again and again and his fingers rapidly typed on the keyboard. What he was seeing was information coming in from the Advanced Scout Satelite in orbit around the moon.

"Son of a bitch!" he yelled, hitting print and running toward a printer in the center of the command center.

"Get the video on that up on screen seven," he shouted as he ran past his neighbors chair!

By the next day, the entire period of time from 23:30 to 02:30 GMT had been ruled as above top secret. Every member of the operations center had been sworn to secrecy, and half of them were reassigned to different stations around the country.

Roger was tasked with making the announcement that the future Artemis III mission, the planned landing on the lunar surface, was indefinitely cancelled. Artemis III would now consist of a lunar orbiting missing, and offer human kind its first chance to get actual eyes on the moon.

There was something new, although, it bore a striking resemblance to a geological anomaly in Antartica. And, as they learned, once a rotation, there was a direct alignment between the two.

It would be the biggest lie ever told, and yet, he knew the mystery was enough to raise panic and suspicion within the scientific and space communities. So, as he stepped up to the platform, preparing to issue the preprepared statement that NASA, The National Security Administration, and the Whitehouse approved, he took a deep breath and began.

As Roger stood there, looking out at the crowd, a large number of faces blankly staring back at him, he began.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for being here," he announced.

Immediately, hands jumped up with a question. First it was the woman in purple. He hadn't expected such a flurry of questions, but he wasn't their normal person to delve out information.

"Is Karoline alright," asked the woman.

"Uh…" he looked to one of the Whitehouse staff who nodded. "Yes, the press secretary is fine. She couldn't attend this briefing but will no doubt, at some point, be back at her post. So, the reason we're here today is the Artemis missions. We're here to announce that due to circumstances beyond our control, Artemis III's lunar landing has been canceled."

With that came the round of questions about why, why isn't it being rescheduled, and what are the circumstances. Unfortunately for the administration, timing wasn't on their side. Fortunately, it did allow for them to tell the world the truth.

"Does this have anything to do with the Social Media alerts that went out about ten minutes ago, the ones with the hacked image from NASA's servers, the one with the giant hole in the lunar surface?"

And with that, Roger, a simple man from NASA, a man who grew up wanting to go to space and wanting to explore the stars, was spared.

"Um," he said as he was being waved off of the stage, "We're going to have to get back to you on that…"

Interesting stuff. I hear it's rescheduled for 2027. I'm going to have to keep an eye on this story. Thank you, Jason. Nicely presented.
